Horse racing is a pretty random topic. How'd you land on that?

That's a funny story. We've eached lived in Maryland our entire lives and we heard the horse racing industry, a hallmark of the Old Line State, was struggling. How could that be? We wanted to find out, so we decided to explore the state to find out why and how insiders are trying to fix it.

Brett is in California. Jacob is in Missouri. Where do you find the time to film?

We care deeply about this project and we appreciate very much the time and effort our sources have put in to meet with us. We want to respect that and provide a bonafide work of documentary journalism. We work diligently every time we're back in Maryland from college and we work from school to get our behind the scenes work out of the way so when we get home, it's all horses.

So how do you two know each other?

That one is easy. Brett and Jacob went to Sherwood High School together where they each worked for The Warrior, Sherwood's student newspaper. Brett, even then a leading filmmaker, led The Warrior into the realm of multimedia reporting. Jacob, the paper's Executive Editor, helped oversee those projects.

Together, they produced a documentary following the Warrior basketball team's run to the Maryland state championship and hosted a debate between student member of the Board of Education candidates.

FAQ

How did two suburban pals find the desire to make a film about horse racing? Aren't you guys busy — you're students after all. How do you two know each other, anyway? Those are all valid questions. We've got the answers to those and more below.

That's Jacob (left) and Brett (right) circa March 2012 shooting "Sherwood 360" at the Comcast Center at the University of Maryland.

I'm a human of horse racing. How can I be included in your film?

We're so happy you're interested and we'd love to hear from you. Shoot us an e-mail from our contact page or tweet at us. We'll get in touch as soon as we can.

Who are you talking to in this documentary?

We don't want to totally ruin the surprise, but we'll give you a few names:

  • William Nack, revered sports journalist and author of Secretariat and Ruffian

  • Ross Peddicord, Executive Director of the Maryland Horse Industry Board

  • Tim Keefe, Head Trainer at TLK Racing Stables

Do either of you actually have any connection to horses?

Actually, we sure do. Jacob's grandparents owned four standard-bred racehorses back in the 1960s and 70s. Only one of them turned out to be something special: Koranui, a feisty Australian who hated losing a lot more than he loved winning. Just ask jockey Joe Green who ran him on Philadelphia's Main Line.

I love this idea. When is your film going to come out?

We're not 100% sure yet, to be honest. We're shooting for the spring of 2015 in time for Triple Crown season. As we progress more and more, we'll post updates on our blog.
