Maryland Horse Racing in Living Color
“Humans of Horse Racing” documentary film debuts its first trailer on new website and Youtube.
MARYLAND — The documentary film project profiling figures from every walk of Maryland’s prestigious horse racing industry released its trailer on Youtube on Monday.
After 10 months of filming and interviews, Humans of Horse Racing has a sparkling preview that teases in-depth interviews with figures from the Maryland equine community and brilliant camera-work from renown director and coproducer Brett Melnick.
Coproducer Jacob Bogage constructed and designed the documentary’s website which officially launched Sunday night.

The film discusses the recent struggles of the industry and searches for solutions to return Maryland horse racing to Mecca it has been for generations.
Legendary writer William Nack, author of Secretariat, and Ross Peddicord, a Pulitzer Prize nominated journalist and director of the Maryland Horse Industry Board, have already shared their views on the future of the “sport of kings” with Melnick and Bogage this spring.
Sagamore Farm in Glyndon, Md., invited the Melnick and Bogage duo to tour its historic racing facility earlier in 2014 and members of its world-class training staff will appear in the film.
Pimlico Racetrack owner Joe De Francis and Olney-based racehorse trainer Tim Keefe will also be featured on the film.
Jacob Bogage is journalism major at the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism. He is a graduate of Sherwood High School in Sandy Spring and has won numerous national and statewide awards in journalistic excellence. Most recently, he won first prize for feature writing from the Missouri College Media Association and second prize for local government reporting from the Maryland-Delaware-DC Press Association. His work has been featured in publications including The Washington Post, Kansas City Star and Gazette newspapers.
Brett Melnick is a film and video studies major at Chapman University and also a graduate of Sherwood High School. His short films, ranging from intellectual original screenplays to sardonic spin-offs of popular television show Spongebob Squarepants, have won international acclaim. In between projects, Melnick teaches film classes at Stanford University and University of California Los Angeles.

OLNEY, Md. — Local award-winning student journalists Brett Melnick and Jacob Bogage are in the early stages of production for the film “Humans of Horse Racing” which profiles the unique characters of Maryland horse racing.
“Humans of Horse Racing” will be released in the early summer of 2015, in time for the Preakness Stakes.
